Tips for Teletherapy

Teletherapy can be odd. Sitting in front of your computer or phone, talking about personal things to a stranger...that doesn't sound fun in almost any way. But the ability to do counseling from home can be a great tool in the world in which we live. Follow these tips to get the most out of your time.

  • Clothing choice: wear what you would wear if you were going to your therapist's office in person.

  • Stay in one place, and put your phone/tablet/computer down on a level surface.

  • Ideally, good lighting and full face view will help you and your therapist connect better. Avoid distractions if at all possible.

  • Put your dogs up, don't answer the door, help your kids find something to do. You get out of your sessions what you put into it, so keep focused.

  • Be aware of the tempo of the session. There IS a short lag time on video conferencing. You'll get used to it and your session rhythm WILL recover, just be patient.

  • Find a quiet, private space so the emotional work can be done.

  • Prioritize this time for yourself. You are worth it!
